The Importance of pH and Acid Mantle
Development

At birth, newborn infants have an almost neutral skin
surface with an average pH value of 6.5. Assuming
that baby skin care is managed properly, normal skin
metabolic processes, secretion of sweat and sebum,
and the gradual colonization of the skin with
micro-organisms results in a gradual adjustment to
an acid pH value of 5.5 on the skin surface during the
first months of life.

The properly developed acid mantle fulfills a series of
major protective functions and supports the
maintenance of healthy skin. Recent studies show
that exposure to products with pH values above 6 and
below 4.5 destabilizes the mantle and
correspondingly reduces barrier function and cellular
regeneration. Impaired barrier function makes skin
susceptible to penetration by irritants, allergens and
pathogens, and impaired cellular regeneration
degrades dermal health and long-term skin vitality.

BABY SKIN CARE BASICS

Baby skin care is a delicate matter. In the early months of life, babies transition from the protective
environment of the womb to changing temperatures, low humidity and exposure to germs, pathogens
and irritating substances. Even simple physical contact with the world, including diapers, clothing,
and blankets, presents a challenge to newborn skin!

Baby skin is very fine, and while it is developing, it is particularly vulnerable to external stimuli. It is
critical to avoid exposing babies to harmful chemicals, irritants, carcinogens and endocrine
disruptors since baby skin is easily penetrated by these agents. Additionally, it is important to
support the proper development of the acid mantle and dermal immunity in the first year of life.

OGbaby is formulated to provide support for the developing skin barrier and immune system using

MOISTURE OIL

Simple, effective, truly organic skin care for babies begins with a moisturizer that promotes critical
acid mantle and dermal immune development. In the same way that breast milk supports the

Organic Sunflower Oil and its Value

A series of recent studies show that sunflower oil is
specifically valuable as an immune developer and
skin-barrier function enhancer in babies. In studies
conducted by Johns Hopkins University scientists, the
application of sunflower oil to baby skin reduced the
incidence of infection in infants by 46%* and reduced
infant mortality in pre-term infants by 26%.** Further

BARRIER BALM
The best way to address the problem of diaper rash is to avoid it before it happens with a safe,
protective organic barrier between baby skin and urine/excrement. When urine and excrement
combine, an enzymatic reaction creates a highly alkaline environment which results in inflamed, red,
scaly skin and allows for an overgrowth of bacteria and yeast.

Really Fragrance Free Barrier Balm is formulated with a base of organic castor oil, a thick, occlusive oil that has
been proven effective in diaper rash prevention and in the treatment of inflammation. The castor oil is combined with
sunflower oil, which supports the development of healthy skin immune function in babies, and whole, organic
chamomile, calendula and lavender flowers, and wildcrafted grindelia herb, extracted in organic olive oil. Non-GMO
Vitamin E oil is added due to its action as a natural skin nutrient. Chamomile, calendula and lavender flowers are
valuable as gentle anti-inflammatory, disinfectant and healing botanicals, and grindelia herb is particularly useful in
the formula as a highly regarded treatment for rashes. Beeswax is one of nature’s most useful ingredients for
skincare, and contributes thickening, soothing and softening properties to the formula.

Fragrance Free Does Not Mean
Chemical Free

In personal care products, “Fragrance Free” is a
common label claim. Unfortunately, FDA cosmetics
regulations do not equate “Fragrance Free” with
“Synthetic Free”, and most products using the claim
include synthetic fragrance-masking agents to
cover the scent of the product. So, for people who
avoid the use of fragrance in the interest of avoiding
irritants and allergens or synthetic compounds, the
term “Fragrance Free” has no value. Hence, the
introduction of OGbaby’s “Really Fragrance Free”
products… which really are fragrance free! There
are no masking chemicals and no essential oils
used in these products, and the only aroma is the
mild, natural scent of the unadulterated organic
ingredients.

Grindelia Herb

Grindelia is traditionally used by Native Americans
as an external treatment for sores and “swellings.”
In 1882, Grindelia appeared in the US
Pharmacopeia, and became favored by Eclectic
physicians, who used it both internally and
externally. In Boericke's Materia Medica, written by
William Boericke in 1901, grindelia is
recommended as a treatment for a rash with
accompanying burning and itching. Today,
naturopathic practitioners regard oil-macerated
grindelia extract as valuable in the topical treatment
of lacerations, poorly healing ulcers, allergic
dermatitis, rashes, blisters and inflammations.*

No Nano Particle Zinc

Most personal care products in the marketplace that contain Zinc Oxide, or Zn0, contain nano-particles. Particles that have been
micronized below 120 nanos wide are a danger to health and to the environment. Most nano-particle Zinc Oxide is 7-15 nanos wide,
allowing it to cross the protective blood-brain barrier. Zn0 is a mineral and will never metabolize, and there is no evidence that this
controversial ingredient is safe. Currently, a number of professional scientist’s groups are petitioning the FDA to prohibit the
unregulated use of nano-particles and restrict use to pharmacological delivery systems in the treatment of cancer and other serious
diseases.

Nano-particle zinc is used heavily in self-reported “natural” sun care products and in baby diaper care products. There is no law
requiring companies to disclose the use of nano-particles in personal care items, and very few companies using nano-particles
indicate use of these ingredients on their labels. Nano-particles are prohibited in Soil Association certified organic products, but have
not yet been prohibited by the USDA National Organic Program.

GENTLE SOAP

We tell mothers and fathers that soap should be used on babies “seldom and sparingly” in the
interest of supporting the development of the acid mantle. Generally, warm water and a soft cloth are
all that is required to wash babies, but now and then babies may need a bit more.

Really Fragrance Free Gentle Soap is a truly gentle formulation, beginning with saponified organic olive, coconut
and jojoba oils, to which organic honey, aloe vera, rosemary extract, guar gum and natural vegetable glycerin are
added. Honey is naturally anti-bacterial and aloe vera is useful as an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-
fungal. Guar gum is a thickener, rosemary extract is an anti-oxidant and vegetable glycerin is a humectant,
meaning that it supports dermal moisturization by attracting water to the skin.

For Best Results: Apply to a soft, wet cloth. Work up lather, smooth lightly over skin and hair, rinse.

A Word about Tear Free Baby Shampoo
Did you ever wonder how a shampoo could be tear free? All "tear Free" shampoos contain an ingredient added
to conventional and some so called organic baby shampoos that effectively anesthetizes the tear ducts, (alkyl
polyethoxylates or alkylphenol polyethoxylates). These agents disable the baby's natural response to eye
irritants, tears. This is not a good thing, as it leaves the irritant in the highly permeable eye tissues, encourages
the mother not to take immediate steps to rinse it away, and the internal absorption of the entire formulation is
enhanced. What a crazy circumstance to ask for! Rather than create a false sense of safety through adding
such anesthetizing ingredients to our gentle soap and calling it a shampoo, we encourage parents to take great
care when using baby soap or baby shampoo on babies' bodies or hair.

Those who prioritize their children's future internal health over the convenience of "better living
through chemistry" products will gladly take steps not to get it into their babies' and childrens' eyes.

Babies and toddlers generally need only tiniest dab of gentle soap, foamed up on a washcloth, and rinsed
immediately with clean water. My son was 4 years old before any kind of shampoo or soap touched his long shiny
blond hair. His older sister and I have envied his glossy locks for years! Unless you are cleaning up after a
cradle cap oiling session, a food fiesta, or a mud puddle war, they generally just need to rinse hair with water.

OGbaby and OGmama's Gentle Soaps do
not contain any precursors to 1, 4 dioxane
or formaldehyde.

The March 2009, Campaign For Safe Cosmetic’s
report “No More Toxic Tub” presented third-party
laboratory results showing that many baby care
products are contaminated with these hyper-toxic
ingredients. The report states:

“Very few, if any, cosmetics or personal care products
list 1,4-dioxane as an ingredient (i), even though an
analysis by Campaign for Safe Cosmetics co-founder
the Environmental Working Group suggests that it may
be found in 22 percent of the more than 25,000
products in the Skin Deep database of cosmetics
products (ii). That's because 1,4-dioxane is a frequent
contaminant of common cosmetics ingredients (iii),
but as a contaminant it is not listed among
intentionally added ingredients.

Most commonly, 1,4-dioxane is found in products that
create suds, like shampoo, liquid soap and bubble
bath. Environmental Working Group's analysis
suggests that 97 percent of hair relaxers, 57 percent of
baby soaps and 22 percent of all products in Skin
Deep may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane (iv).
Independent lab tests co-released by the Campaign
for Safe Cosmetics in 2007 showed that popular
brands of children’s bubble bath and body wash
contained 1,4-dioxane.

Besides sodium laureth sulfate, other common
ingredients that may be contaminated by 1,4-dioxane
include PEG compounds and chemicals that include
the clauses "xynol," "ceteareth" and "oleth."

1,4-dioxane: A carcinogenic contaminant of cosmetic products. Listed by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics as a Level 10 Hazard, which is the
highest rating, and cited for Allergy/Immunotoxicity, Carcinogenic Activity, Renal Toxicity, Sense Organ Toxicity, Respiratory Toxicity, Eye Irritant,
Reproductive Toxicity and Neurotoxicity. It is also cited as a Ecotoxin and Persistent Bioaccumlative in Wildlife. It is banned in Canada and the
European Union.

Formaldehyde: Used as a cosmetic biocide, denaturant and preservative. It is a known carcinogen (causes cancer). Causes allergic, irritant
and contact dermatitis, headaches and chronic fatigue. The vapour is extremely irritating to the eyes, nose and throat (mucous membranes).
Listed by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics as a Level 10 Hazard, which is the highest rating. Formaldehyde contaminates personal care
products when common preservatives release formaldehyde over time in the container. Common ingredients likely to contaminate products with
formaldehyde include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea.

Benefits of Chamomile for gentle skin care is a well established historic fact.

References to the medicinal use of chamomile extend to ancient times, in Egyptian and Greek records. Externally, chamomile is
highly recommended for use in skin care products, to spur wound healing, deter inflammation and soothe generally irritated
conditions. Trillium uses oil-maceration of chamomile flowers that allows the resulting “infused oil” to carry the calming aroma of
chamomile without incorporating essential oils that are inappropriate for infants and may be irritating to the most sensitive skin
conditions.

Avoid Environmental Toxins and Irritants

Environmental toxins and irritants are pervasive, and diligence and attention is required to avoid exposing our children and ourselves to these dangers. Plastic, mattresses, paint, carpets,
personal care, clothing, pharmaceuticals, food and even air are all potential sources of toxins. We are able to control exposure to toxins to various degrees, given information and access to
healthful alternatives.
